While the general contractor and crews are working on their projects, Josh and I have a few of our own. Including the door restoration project: we want to remove the original paint from all the interior doors.
Typically, when I am restoring furniture to paint or repurpose, I use CitriStrip Stripping Gel. I love this product; however, I felt I needed something slightly stronger for the door project. I knew I wanted to test a few products prior to starting such a massive mission to identify the optimal paint remover. I stumbled across Dumond’s Complete Paint Removal Test Patch Kit on Amazon and decided to give it a try.
We (meaning my handy partner) brought home a test door.
First, I made sure to thoroughly clean the door and remove the hardware.
I applied each product to a designated area and covered it with the provided peel away paper. (I must admit… I did not wait the instructed time period before my curiosity won.) After about 30 minutes, I removed the paper.
I was impressed with the Smart Strip test section. I used the scraper to gently remove the product and the paint seemed to easily come off of the wood. We were off to a good start…
The second test area was Smart Strip PRO. When I scraped this section off, the product removed easily; however, some specs of paint that remained.
The third product… y’all. I went to peel the paper back and this is what happened:
The paint actually came up with the paper! Needless to say, we found which product we are going to try!
All products removed several layers of paint. When I applied a larger section of Peel Away, some overlapped and I noticed that it removed more of the stain from the door. The instructions say to let the product stay on the wood for 24-48 hours and then you scrape it off and sand the raw wood. I’m excited for this product to arrive to test different time frames and see what all can be accomplished. Stay tuned!
